NeuroCatch® is designed for healthcare practitioners to measure the cognitive brain function of their clients. It also supports neuro-researchers who require an easy-to-use and convenient cognitive brain function measurement system.

NeuroCatch® scans can be performed by clinicians in healthcare facilities at any point of care, for settings such as clinics, labs, hospitals, sporting venues, schools, military theatres, and remote deployments.

The results of the scan provide healthcare practitioners with objective measurements of specific brain functions: Auditory sensation; Basic attention; Cognitive processing. These measurements can be used to help their clients identify areas for improvement, customize their treatment plan or journey to recovery[2], and understand how their brain function is today.

NeuroCatch® provides an essential objective physiological benchmark to help support existing behavioural cognitive assessments. The fully automated process of NeuroCatch® creates repeatable evaluations, allowing clinicians to sensitively monitor changes over time.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

NeuroCatch® conducts a rapid 6-minute scan to measure and report on cognitive brain function. It produces a report immediately after the scan to display information on three different brain responses, also known as event-related potentials (ERPs). The ERPs are termed the ABCs of NeuroCatch®:

N100

Auditory Sensation

The N100 response is elicited by auditory tones that elicit a negative (N) peak that occurs around 100 milliseconds after hearing the tones (100). It is normal for the N100 to vary somewhat in response speed and size. A typical response may be a little faster or somewhat later than 100 milliseconds and the size may vary from small (a few microvolts) to larger (greater than 10 microvolts) depending on the specific situation.

Individual N100 results can be evaluated within a standardized normative framework. The N100 represents sensory and perceptual processing of the sounds (Auditory sensation). The N100 is a physiological representation that the sensory information has entered auditory processing systems of the brain.

P300

Basic Attention

The P300 response is elicited by occasionally unexpected tones embedded within a routine sequence of expected tones. The P300 is a positive (P) peak that occurs around 300 milliseconds after hearing the unexpected tones (300). It is normal for the P300 to vary somewhat in response speed and size. A typical response may be a little faster or later than 300 milliseconds and the size may vary from a few microvolts to greater than 10 microvolts.

Individual P300 results can be evaluated within a standardized normative framework. The P300 response is sensitive to unpredictable events that require attention, contextual updating and memory processes (Basic attention). The P300 is a physiological representation of information processing systems within the brain.

N400

Cognitive Processing

The N400 response is related to processing word pairs where some word pairs match and others do not, with the mismatching words eliciting the N400. The N400 is a negative (N) peak that occurs around 400 after hearing the mismatching word (400). It is normal for the N400 to vary somewhat in response speed and size. A typical response may be a little faster or later than 400 milliseconds and the size may vary from a microvolt to greater than 5 microvolts.

Individual N400 results can be evaluated within a standardized normative framework. The N400 response is sensitive to semantic language processing during speech perception (Cognitive processing). The N400 is a physiological representation of language comprehension systems within the brain.


how does it work?

NeuroCatch® uses three very light sensors that are held in place on your head by a thin mesh cap. The sensors are located at the front, middle and back of your scalp. The healthcare practitioner will spread a few drops of gel between the sensors and your skin to receive a clear EEG signal from your brain.

Once the cap is in place, you will be given a set of earphones, with earbuds, to place in your ears. After you receive instructions on staying alert and relaxed, the audio sequence will start and play a variety of tones and word pairs for 6 minutes.

During this time, NeuroCatch® records how fast your brain is reacting to these sounds as well as how strongly your brain responds. After the scan is complete, your healthcare practitioner will review the results in the report with you.

REPORTING

NeuroCatch® data processing software takes selected EEG scan data, processes it, and uses a proprietary algorithm to identify three distinct peaks in the event-related potential (ERP) data:
  • Auditory Sensation [N100]
  • Basic Attention [P300]
  • Cognitive Processing [N400]
A detailed report that provides a user-friendly summary of the quantified results and scores is generated immediately after a NeuroCatch® scan.
